The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is a campus of the University of Minnesota system. UMR offers distinctive health sciences and biosciences education to prepare students for a broad spectrum of current and emerging careers, ranging from patient care to pure and applied research. The campus community serves approximately 750 undergraduate and graduate students in the heart of downtown Rochester. By continuing to meet the needs of the southern Minnesota region through its programmatic offerings, UMR proudly leads the way to a brighter future for our community, our state, and our world.
The Rochester Higher Education Development Committee (RHEDC) delivered a report to the Legislature and the Governor in January of 2006. The committee’s recommendation was to establish "a world class higher education institution that leverages the University of Minnesota’s research capability, in partnership with IBM, Mayo Clinic and other industry leaders to build signature academic and research programs that complement southeast Minnesota’s existing leadership roles in health sciences, biosciences, engineering and technology." UMR has expanded its collaborations and partnerships beyond the academic programs to working hand-in-hand with local establishments to provide student housing, recreation, and entertainment as well.
