About

History

  • Historically, McMaster University is the outgrowth of educational work initiated by Baptists in central Canada as early as the 1830's. Named after Senator William McMaster (1811-1887), who bequeathed substantial funds to endow "a Christian school of learning", the University was incorporated under the terms of an act of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1887.

Research

The Research Office for Administration, Development and Support (ROADS) helps researchers access funding from external granting agencies. Formerly known as the Office of Research Services, ROADS supports McMaster's research community through the funding application process and helps bring awarded projects into operation. The ROADS Development Unit supports researchers through the identification of funding opportunities, provision of information sessions, and review and editing of grant submissions.

Services

Student services

ISS provides core services to the international student population and to Canadian students wishing to go abroad. These services include:

  • advising on immigration matters
  • promotion and administration of international exchange programs, study/work/volunteer abroad opportunities
  • mentorship programs
  • language cafè
  • promoting, supporting and guiding students for international careers
  • health insurance for international degree-seeking students, exchange
  • students and visiting students

Housing services

Student Housing – The university owns and operates 12 on-campus residence buildings. Traditional residences offer co-ed, single-sex, small, medium and large floor/building choices. Apartment-style living is offered in two residences: Bates Residence and Mary E. Keyes Residence.

Library services

  • The Library's William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections houses extensive archives including those of Bertrand Russell and a noteworthy collection of eighteenth-century literature
  • The combined collections of the libraries total more than 1.9 million print and electronic books, 86,000 print and electronic journal titles, and 14,000 linear feet of archival resources

Medical services

The Health, Safety and Risk Management Unit of Human Resources Services is focused on environmental and occupational health, safety, loss prevention and mitigation in addition to supporting employees in a health and safe return to work following an injury or illness, facilitating workplace accommodations and fostering healthier work environments.

Student Life

Campus life

McMaster's main campus, located in the Westdale neighbourhood of Hamilton, Ontario, is comprised of 300 acres of scenic property at the western end of Lake Ontario, between Toronto and Niagara Falls.

Sports facilities

  • 10 Acre Field houses three natural grass fields and is attached to some of the trails that lead into the Royal Botanical Gardens.
  • The Alpine Tower creates the ideal setting for fostering teambuilding, improving communication, and developing self-esteem.
  • Alumni Field - McMaster University's artificial soft surface Alumni Field began serving the McMaster and surrounding community in 2006.
  • The Burridge gymnasium features three basketball and four volleyball courts with a wood playing surface. The facility is the competitive venue for McMaster basketball, volleyball and wrestling. The Burridge gymnasium includes seating for 2,250 .

Student clubs

Similar to a high school student council, the MSU (or McMaster Students Union Inc.) is the representative/governing body for all full-time undergraduate students at McMaster. It supports and administers more than 250 cultural, academic and social issues clubs on campus. It also operates one of our campus pubs 1280, the Union Market convenience store, and a number of other services. As a full time student, you automatically become a member of the MSU.For a complete listing of student clubs.

Accreditation

McMaster University, Continuing Health Sciences Education Program (CHSE) is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME) to provide CFPC MainPro and RCPSC Maintenance of Certification (MOC) study credits for Continuing Medical Education.The accreditation guidelines require that the CE Office be involved in the planning of all accredited programs.

I loved the opportunity to explore the workforce through the integrated Co-op program. The curriculum was highly focused on research and provided an emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving. Certain courses required a lot of memorization work, but it really prepares you for working with your intuition. The program itself can be improved by expanding the number of...

Honestly, it has been great! I met a lot of amazing and hopefully life-long friends. As well, my learning at McMaster has been good (I think)

I enjoyed the size and sense of community that McMaster campus provides. I did, however, feel that we were often not challenged enough as students. I also felt that a lot of the courses I took did not provide a diversity of opinions - particularly those from the social sciences and humanities faculties.
