History
The Dyson School of Design Engineering was founded in 2014 to meet the need for training that bridges the gap between engineering and design. The focus is on the innovative, user-centred style of engineering which brings human factors into the design process.
The School is the newest in the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial and has a 50/50 gender balance in its student cohort.Education
Our masters courses train you to become a different kind of engineer. The focus is on coming up with innovative, sustainable solutions driven by human needs. In our courses you’ll get familiar with the challenges of producing impactful designs, bringing innovative solutions to market and optimising the processes to make them.
You’ll spend much of your time working practically, making your designs become a reality through prototyping. This will see you getting hands-on with our wealth of advanced equipment including our 3D printing space, robotics and electronics fabrication facilities, electronics fabrication space, wet lab, rapid prototyping and workshop facilities.
Research
As an MSc student you’ll spend six months working on an individual project while for MRes students the project is a ‘mini-PhD’ and represents around two-thirds of your programme.
During your programme you’ll gain trans-disciplinary research skills which combine quantitative surveys with qualitative approaches that bring in people’s experiences and insights.
Imperial’s research is rated as the best in the UK (REF2021), and ranks first in the UK for research outputs, first in the UK for research environment, and first for research impact among Russell Group universities.
