Overview
The Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery program offered by The University of the West Indies helps students aquire a core of knowledge, competencies and behaviours which will enable them to:
- Apply relevant knowledge from the biomedical and behavioural sciences to the care of individuals, families and groups in community and hospital settings.
- Plan, and/or engage in health promotion activities aimed at promoting healthy life styles in individuals and communities.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other members of the health team.
- Function harmoniously and constructively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team within the health sector and between the health sector and other sectors of society.
- Participate in planning, organising, directing and evaluating heath care.
- Keep abreast of social, medical and technological advances through participation in continuing medical education.
Careers

General requirements
- Minimum of five (5) CSEC (CXC) subjects (gen. prof. Grades I-III) and/or GCE ‘O’ Levels (grades A-C) including English Language and Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and PhysicsThe minimum academic requirements for admission to the MBBS Programme are based on performance in the Caribbean Proficiency Examination (CAPE)/GCE ‘A’ Level Examinations or their equivalent.
- Applicants must: Have attained their 18th birthday by December 30 of the year of entry
- Have achieved passes in three (3) Two-Unit CAPE or three (3) ‘A’ Level subjects according to any one of the following schemes
- A minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or its equivalent has been obtained.
