Course Details
This Design BDes program at York University combines the faculty and resources of two leading institutions that are committed to excellence in teaching and to the development of the design discipline by engaging in pure and applied research. Students learn to address contemporary issues through effective design solutions by using relevant methodologies and visual principles of form, imagery, and typography.
Our curriculum reflects the distinct practical, research and theoretical needs of the design profession. It provides a comprehensive education within the ever-expanding discipline of graphic design. Our program strives to provide students with the skills in making and thinking necessary to succeed in contemporary practice. Additionally, courses in design studies provide an integrated approach to the history, research and theory, management and critical issues of design. YSDN students have access to a broad range of courses at York such as philosophy, women's studies, literature, film theory, art history and gender studies, among many other disciplines.
Students benefit from outstanding faculty, small classes, up-to-date facilities and dedicated technical support.Between third and fourth year, our internship program enables students to gain experience in a professional design firm. Students cap their final year by organizing and exhibiting their work in a graduation show in downtown Toronto. The students’ talent and dedication reflects itself at every opportunity. Students have received much recognition in regional, national and international competitions, and with private and government agencies in Canada, the USA and Europe.

York's state-of-the-art Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Centre and Sheridan's new Sheldon Levy Centre boast nearly two hundred Macintosh work stations in 10 dedicated design studios utilizing the most current client-server systems and application software. Other equipment includes:

- Video editors and broadcasters
- Interactive display systems
- Letterpresses and historic lead and wood type
- Professional quality black and white and colour laser printers
- A large format (44" wide) Epson Stylus Pro 9880 colour inkjet printer
- Digital still and motion cameras
