Overview

Chemical and Pharmaceutical Science programme is delivered by Dublin City University is for you. Chemistry and pharmaceutical science fuel life-changing breakthroughs, from life-saving medicines to new materials. This degree provides deep scientific knowledge and hands-on lab experience, teaching how chemical products and pharmaceuticals are discovered, designed, analysed, and developed. From your very first day, you’ll build a strong foundation across organic, inorganic, physical, analytical and medicinal chemistry, all supported by essential modules in biology and pharmaceutical science. You’ll spend plenty of time in the lab, developing practical skills on industry-standard equipment - the same tools used by professionals in leading chemical, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical organisations. This hands-on experience prepares you to step confidently into your future career.

As you move through your studies, you’ll explore how new drugs and chemical products are developed, how they work in the body, and how they are formulated and tested for quality, safety and effectiveness. You’ll also gain insight into how the chemical and pharmaceutical industries operate, from research and development to regulation and large-scale manufacturing. This knowledge equips you to make a meaningful impact at every stage of the process.

Career

Your opportunities are extensive both at home and abroad. Obviously, much will depend on your specialisations, but you can expect to fill such positions as process chemist, development chemist, analytical chemist and research chemist/scientist in diverse sectors such as the pharmaceutical, food and drink, brewing and fine chemical industries.

This course is also suitable for those who ultimately wish to pursue a career in teaching, as it is recognised by the Teaching Council to teach chemistry (see www.teachingcouncil.ie for further details).
