This four-year MSci Physics course includes a year gaining hands-on paid experience in industry. A year spent in industry can be a life-changing challenge: a rewarding experience which helps you hone your skills in project management, teamwork, and communication, as well as an insight into commercial pressures and real-world applied science.

About

In recent years, our students have worked in companies involved in renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, technology, defence and aviation.

During your year in industry, you will continue to study core physics via distance learning in readiness for returning to Bristol for your final year.

Why study Physics at Bristol?

Our courses are designed to challenge you and develop your abilities as a critical thinker.

Flexibility and choice are key features of a Bristol Physics degree. You can normally transfer between courses in the first two years, and a range of options in the final year means you can specialise in your chosen field or take a more general approach.

A thorough grounding in physics will equip you well whichever degree you choose - and you may choose to spend a year in industry working on a challenging project, or to study physics at a partner university in Europe.

In addition to your degree, you could get involved in communicating science via Discover Science days and school visits.

Our physics degrees are accredited by the Institute of Physics, who also awarded us Juno status in recognition of our best practice and contribution to the representation of women in physics. We are also proud holders of an Athena SWAN award.

CHAOS, the physics students' society, has been awarded 'best student society' by the University of Bristol Students' Union.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    6.5

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

  • Minimum required score:
