Over 50 years, we created the world-leading 'Historical Thesaurus of English'. You will also have access to dedicated laboratories for written language.

As a graduate from the English Language and Linguistics course at University of Glasgow you will be an expert in language, communication and the rigorous analysis of texts and events in the real world. Programme Structure

Course Overview:

  • You will learn about the structure, meaning and history of the English language: how our language both now and in the past influences our interactions with each other and with the world.
  • Your first year gives you a taster of the variety of questions that we ask about our language in English Language & Linguistics.
  • In the first semester, you will learn about how we build meaning out of words and phrases, and then relate that meaning to the world. You will learn how advertisers, politicians, and storytellers can take advantage of the complexity of language to sway listeners to their side. And you will trace the history of English from its earliest roots, as it developed towards its modern form. 

English Language Requirements

    The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

  • Minimum required score:

    6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.   • Standard entry requirements: AAB guaranteed offer if additional requirements met.
  • Minimum entry requirements: BBB considered for offer if meet additional requirements met.
  • Additional requirements: Applicants who wish to study a joint programme that includes Mathematics, Statistics or Computing Science must also meet BSc requirements for those programmes. 

International Baccalaureate

  • Standard academic entry requirements: 36 points including three HL subjects at 6,6,5 guaranteed offer if additional requirements met.
  • Minimum academic entry requirements: 32 points including three HL subjects at 6,5,5 considered for offer if meet additional requirements met.
