About

The Mathematics with Economics (Hons) degree offered at the Aston University delivered jointly by the Mathematics group of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Aston Business School, combines economics, finance and business oriented modules with applied Mathematics modules.

Overview

Mathematics provides the advanced tools and techniques needed for facing these new tasks, and takes an increasingly significant role in future developments, as businesses and people become more connected and take decisions with the help of algorithms designed by mathematicians and data analysts. Graduates who speak the international language of mathematics and who have acquired specific knowledge about the business and finance world are in a privileged position to shape the world of tomorrow.

The Mathematics with Economics (Hons) degree offered at the Aston University incorporates a placement year after the second year (sandwich course). Combining both principal and specialised subjects, the course prepares students for high-level careers in the private and public sectors.

Career prospects

The course has been specifically designed to meet the huge demand for skilled Mathematics graduates with solid training in Economics, mostly across the finance and information-intensive sectors. An external panel from industry has advised on the content and structure of the course. Graduates may be employed in a broad range of positions; for instance in research and development teams as part of a large company or in start-ups, as trainee analysts and consultants. Graduates may also continue their training in MSc and PhD courses, or pursue teaching and education careers. Typical areas of employment included finance, IT, education and consultancy.
