About

Teacher Education in German is a four-year programme in an international setting and has been taught in English. You are trained to teach at secondary schools and vocational training colleges and to work in an international environment.

The Teacher Education programme is located in the Archimedes Institute and part of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. The programme offers 14 teacher curricula leading to a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed). The German Teacher Education programme has been an English taught study programme since 2015.

This Teacher Education in German programme is offered by the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. This programme qualifies you to teach in the following school categories and levels in the Netherlands:

  • The first three years of secondary education (HAVO and VWO) equivalent to lower secondary education in the British system and the middle years programme of the International Baccalaureate;
  • Vocational secondary schools and colleges
  • Special Education (VMBO, MBO).

Career prospects

In the Netherlands many teachers are set to retire during the coming years. Although they will be replaced by new ones, your job prospects remain pretty strong.

You can work as an German teacher for lower secondary school levels (years 12- 16) teaching German as a Foreign or Second language or teaching German as a Foreign language or Second language in language schools.

A higher-level qualification such as B.Ed is essential to pursue a long-term career and can lead to senior positions in schools, such as subject leader or director of studies.

You can also start working as a freelancer and combine some of the following activities:

  • teaching part time or giving private tuition on a one-to-one basis
  • writing course books and other material
  • teacher training and delivery and marking of examinations
  • marketing and publishing

Starting salaries differ from one specialisation to another, but should be around €2.450 gross in the Netherlands.

With a double degree qualification you are highly valued by schools and employers in the professional field. Two degrees prove your flexibility as a teacher and boost your prospects of finding a teaching position. In addition, if you have plans to work outside the Netherlands, many countries require you to be qualified in two subjects.
