Overview

Archaeology

During your Archaeology and History of Art course of studies offered by University of Malta , they will provide you with the academic knowledge required to understand how archaeology is a necessary and important area through which modern society can learn about primitive or ancient societies and cultures on a global scale. They offer a Mediterranean archaeological perspective where you will have the opportunity to put to practice the concepts and theories learned into the field work unit offered during summer recess. 

They will also encourage you to undergo the Erasmus+ mobility programme, as they believe that a diversified and multi-cultural experience through international learning will provide you with a more refined learning outcome.

Applicants wishing to join the part-time mode must submit their application as full-time, and then include a note in the comments box of the application form, denoting their preference to be considered for the part-time option. Such requests will be considered by the Board of the Faculty.

History of Art

In this comprehensive course offered by the Department of Art and Art History, you will be equipped with the academic discipline of Art History and fully engage with the rich and wide-ranging narratives of European art, from Antiquity to the Contemporary. You will explore cultural, religious, social, and economic contexts; delve into critical, theoretical, and philosophical discussions; and study the techniques of various artists. Throughout the course, you'll develop skills in connoisseurship and gain a deeper understanding of artworks within their multifaceted contexts. 

You’ll benefit from the Department’s expertise in areas such as Medieval and Renaissance Art, Baroque Art, Architecture, Visual Culture, Decorative Arts, Nineteenth-Century Art, and Modern and Contemporary Art. The course is further enriched by an annual study tour to European cities and regular guest lectures from international scholars and academics on specialized topics. If you continue with your Honours, you will have the opportunity to carry out a research-based dissertation of your choice.

Careers

Archaeology

As a graduate of this course, you will have career opportunities both locally and abroad, in which your valuable knowledge on the subject will be demonstrated. You will be able to pursue a career as an archaeologist, conservator, heritage manager, historic buildings inspector or conservation officer, museum/gallery curator, tourism officer, records manager, archivist, cartographer and as a social research. 

If you are interested in furthering your studies, or are considering an academic career in archaeology, then they encourage you to enrol in a postgraduate course offered at the University, where you will be able to hone your knowledge and gain a holistic understanding of the subject.

History of Art

As a graduate of this course you will be employable, both locally and internationally, as a conservator, heritage manager, commercial art gallery manager, academic librarian, archivist and arts administrator.
