Overview

Study one language, French or Spanish or with our flexible degree you can improve your multilingualism by learning both languages.

You can focus your degree on one language – French or Spanish or enhance your multilingualism by learning both languages. At the same time, you can also explore historical and cultural aspects relating to your chosen language and the communities that speak it, such as film, contemporary issues or politics.

The year abroad is fantastic preparation for today’s multilingual, multicultural world of work. You can add a second year abroad via the ‘International Experience’ option. Using your language skills in real-life situations not only increases your proficiency, but also boosts your confidence, independence and resilience. You’ll graduate with transferrable skills in communication, translation, presentation, problem solving, research, analysis, teamworking, adaptability, resilience, and people.

Careers

The  Modern Languages (French, Spanish) (Hons) programme offered by Bangor University  not only equips you with subject-specific skills, but also a broad range of transferrable skills that are highly valued in the workplace. This is reflected in the variety of careers our graduates follow and the fact that a large proportion end up working abroad. We have graduates working in a wide variety of countries in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Your language skills will be particularly useful in countries where your language is either the official or one of the official languages used for communication. Regions that are popular destinations for tourism and hospitality also need people with different language skills, as do organisations and companies that deal with international partners, suppliers, clients and customers.

Some of the graduates remain very much focused on language itself. Many go on to train as language teachers at primary or secondary school level. Another popular career is that of translator, either freelance or embedded in a company, with opportunities both in the UK and further afield. 

Others take advantage of access to specialist training here at Bangor to become teachers of English abroad, while some even go on to do postgraduate study with a view to entering academia.

When it comes to your career options, the sky is the limit – we’ve had students go on to become an airline pilot, a sports commentator and university international officer. Some have used their language skills to set up their own successful businesses, including a bespoke writing company.
