Overview

Philosophy of Law at York University courses provide a systematic overview of what makes law unique and important, equipping students with knowledge of common features of law, legal reasoning and actual legal systems which benefit from philosophical investigation.

Students will also examine important moral and political values which often underlie, sometimes justify, and frequently explain controversies surrounding the aims of law. Students will learn how to develop rigorous and creative moral insights that can be used as critical frameworks in the evaluation of law, and assess key political principles which govern our law-making institutions, such as constitutional freedoms, the separation of powers, democracy, judicial review and the rule of law.
