Overview

The Theatre (Production and Design) programme at York University provides students with an immersive environment to master the technical and artistic aspects of live performance. By integrating rigorous classroom learning with intensive practical workshops, the curriculum ensures that participants gain a deep understanding of how to bring creative visions to life on stage and screen.

Why Theatre (Production and Design) at York University?

Students benefit from the AMPD Advantage, which includes access to world-class facilities designed to replicate professional industry environments. Training takes place in the Sandra Faire and Ivan Fecan Theatre, a 360-seat venue equipped with a comprehensive lighting grid, fly system, and live audio-video feeds. Additionally, the campus features a specialised Black Box theatre and a Carpentry Shop comparable in scale to major national festivals, featuring Canada’s only moving paint wall.

The programme emphasises experiential education through Theatre@York productions. Direct-entry students can enrol early in production practica, allowing them to serve as apprentice crew heads and supervise first-year teams. This early responsibility fosters professional networking and leadership skills within Canada’s largest hub for theatre, film, and television.
