Overview

The graduate of the English and American Studies programme from Catholic University in Ružomberok is acquainted with the most important cultural and social realities and history of English-speaking countries.

Learning objectives

To acquire language skills (receptive, productive, interactive) and communication language competencies (grammatical, pragmatic and socio-linguistic) in English at level B2 - C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

To acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills from the basic disciplines of English linguistics (phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicology) as a basis for further linguistic education at the master's level.

As part of the study of the history and literature of Anglophone countries, to acquire knowledge about their cultural and social life in the past and present. To acquire the basic terminology in the field of literary theory and T_Z_DSP_1/2020 Page 2 of 10 to acquire skills needed in the analysis and interpretation of literary texts. To get to know literary works by English-speaking authors, to be able to evaluate them, to interpret them in a broader socio-historical context.

To gain knowledge of basic concepts, movements, genres, authors and the process of mediation in critical and cultural studies and to learn how cultural, political, social, technological and economic changes are reflected in converging forms of cultural production and critical thinking.

To be able to critically evaluate information, to analyse and evaluate primary and secondary texts. To gain experience and skills in writing professional texts based on scientific research, in compliance with the procedural, structural and ethical rules of academic writing.

Exams: Journalism (an oral interview, applicants should also submit 2 examples of their, preferably, journalistic work); English and American Studies (an oral interview about the culture and history of anglophone countries); teacher training programme in English Language and Literature (an oral interview after about the culture and history of anglophone countries).
