Vital to the global ecosystem, almost a third of the world’s land surface is covered with forests, which absorb around 15.6 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Trees naturally filter air and water, help prevent soil erosion, and provide shelter, food and resources to humans and wildlife. The provisioning services of forest ecosystems are also vital to meeting future timber needs of the UK.
