Overview

This popular Marine Biology (Hons) course allows you to explore the fundamental aspects of marine biology, as well as specialised areas like aquaculture, fisheries, and marine biotechnology.

As we become increasingly aware of the importance of marine organisms in climate regulation, food sources, medicine, and other products, this field of study becomes ever more crucial. The oceans are home to the majority of the world's species, from the smallest microorganisms to the largest invertebrates like giant squid and mammals such as the blue whale.

Career opportunities:

This is an ideal preparation for careers in research, conservation, marine resource management, fisheries and aquaculture, government advisory bodies, think tanks, the scientific media, ecotourism and much more.

Many of our graduates go on to work in conservation, consultancy, teaching, and research. Their employers include Natural Resources Wales, Environment Resources Management, MarineSpace Ltd, Operation Wallacea, the World Wildlife Fund, and Viking Expeditions, to name just a few.

Examples of successful graduates include, Thomas Bell, who is now the director of Changes Us, a green campaigns agency for the third sector. Jade Caygill is an animal technician at the University of Manchester, while Lewis Jones is a river habitat improvement technician with Mersey Basin Rivers Trust. George Twyman is now a warfare specialist (submariner) in the Royal Navy.

You’ll graduate with a range of transferrable skills, including critical problem solving, data collection and analysis, teamwork, organisation, and communicating information. Some of our students continue their studies, undertaking a wide range of postgraduate (MSc, MScRes, and PhD) programmes.
