Overview
Game development refers to the processes, techniques, theories, and practices related to the creation of video games. It’s a multidisciplinary field requiring knowledge in areas like programming, psychology, storytelling, and visual art—combining technical precision with creative intuition.
The Game Development (Hons) programme from University of Wollongong is designed by industry professionals and pioneers, and students can choose from three specialisation areas:
- GAME ART focuses on the visual side of game development, where students learn to create 2D and 3D assets from pixel-based styles to hyper-realistic environments.
- GAME DESIGN is about shaping gameplay—from mechanics and levels to narrative and player interaction.
- GAME TECHNOLOGY covers the technical backbone of game development including graphics engine, physics, artificial intelligence, and network systems.
Career prospects
The global video game industry is worth billions—offering diverse career paths across both creative and technical areas. Whether you’re focused on art, design, or engineering, the opportunities are vast. Many of our graduates move into AAA studios, indie development, or even establish their own startups. These roles are increasingly relevant not just in game development, but also across creative media, entertainment, and tech sectors.
