This programme is Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligible either by meeting IRCC’s field of study criteria (as of November 1, 2024) or by being a degree programme exempt from these requirements (as of March 11, 2025). Please consult the IRCC website for the most current information.

This includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation tools required to provide nursing care to those of all ages. Throughout the Practical Nursing programme at Algonquin College , learning opportunities include theory, lab techniques, applied experiences and independent study.

Careers

To practice as a Registered Practical Nurse in Ontario, you are required to be licensed by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). This programme gives you the necessary knowledge and skills to write the Regulatory Exam - Practical Nurse (REx-PN) in Ontario.

Registered Practical Nurses work in close collaboration with healthcare teams. You may find employment in a variety of settings such as community clinics, private homes, long term care homes, as well as medical, surgical, rehabilitative and obstetrical units.

General requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent; OR

Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the programme). Eligibility may be determined by academic achievement testing, for which a fee will be charged.

English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent) with a grade of 65% or higher.

Mathematics, Grade 12 (MAP4C or equivalent) with a grade of 65% or higher.

Biology, Grade 11 or 12 with a grade of 65% or higher.

Chemistry, Grade 11 or 12 with a grade of 65% or higher.

Applicants with international transcripts must provide proof of the subject specific requirements noted above and may be required to provide proof of language proficiency. Domestic applicants with international transcripts must be evaluated through the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) or World Education Services (WES).
