A person in possession of this qualification is able to:

• Competently apply an integration of theory, principles, proven techniques, practical experience and appropriate skills towards solving broadly-defined problems in the field of Engineering, whilst operating within the relevant standards and codes.
• Demonstrate well-rounded general engineering knowledge, as well as systematic knowledge of the main terms, procedures, principles and operations applicable to Civil Engineering.
• Gather evidence from primary sources and journals using advanced retrieval skills, and also organise, synthesise and present the information professionally in a mode appropriate to the audience.
• Apply the acquired knowledge to new situations, both concrete and abstract, in the workplace or community.
• Identify, analyse, conduct and manage a project.
• Make independent decisions/judgements, taking into account the relevant technical, economic, social and environmental factors.

Career Opportunities

A person holding this qualification is prepared for a career as an engineering technologist in the engineering consultancy and construction industry. Three basic activities are dealt with, namely planning and design, construction, and maintenance. The work to be performed will vary, depending on the area in which the individual is working, but in all respects, he/she will be required to assist professional engineers. Other work will involve surveying, design, analysis, cost accounting, draughting, traffic studies and material testing. Career opportunities exist in government departments, as well as organisations such as PRASA, Eskom, mining companies, construction firms, civil consulting engineers, and research institutions. A person holding this qualification after graduating this Civil Engineering programme from Central University of Technology, Free State can also start his/her own business.
