Overview
The Bachelor of Education in Home Economics and Technology (BEd HET) is a four-year degree designed for those who wish to teach Home Economics and Technology at post-primary level in Ireland. Delivered through a unique partnership between Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) and Dublin City University (DCU), this undergraduate course combines practical expertise with educational theory and innovation.
Students will complete the first two years at the TUS Athlone campus and the final two years at the DCU Institute of Education in Dublin. On graduation, students will be eligible to register with the Teaching Council of Ireland as fully qualified post-primary teachers.
This course equips future educators with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to teach across a range of areas including culinary and textile production, design thinking, and technological innovation—preparing them to meet the evolving needs of students and society.
Careers
You will be eligible to register as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) and apply for employment as a teacher of Home Economics and Technology in post primary schools in Ireland. Teacher education graduates can also gain employment in industry, media, governmental, non-governmental and other settings.

- Minimum grade O3/H7 in Mathematics required
- GCE A Level D or GCE AS Level C or GCSE B in Mathematics.
- International candidates are expected to have educational qualifications of a standard equivalent to those outlined above. In addition, where such candidates are non-native speakers of the English language they must satisfy the university of their competency in the English language.
