About

Biochemistry is a pivotal degree discipline in the modern world and a fundamental part of all the biological sciences. Biochemistry is the study of living systems at the molecular level, and biochemists study the ways in which cells and organisms are formed. This involves examining the structure and function of molecules found in living systems, as well as experimental investigations of the properties of biological systems ranging in complexity from cell extracts to whole organisms, and elucidating the roles of specific genes in the cells in which they are expressed.

The foundation of the course is our thriving research in diverse areas of biochemistry including biotechnology, cancer biology, membrane transport, molecular diagnostics and therapeutics, plant biochemistry, and protein structure.

In this  Biochemistry (Honours) degree at the University of Westminster you will gain a sound foundation in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and analytical biochemical techniques.

Career Path

Biochemistry graduates work in a wide range of areas including the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, biomedicine, environmental sustainability and food security.

You will be able to develop your own interests and aspirations in these areas during your degree by taking modules such as Medical Physiology, Systems Pharmacology, Contemporary Global Issues, Medical Genetics in Practice, Advanced Pharmacology & Toxicology, Global Ethics, Designing a Sustainable World and Applied Biotechnology.

Accreditation

This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting in part the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).
