Molecular Biology and Genetics Gebze Technological University

Overview

In 1993, while the first ideas for the establishment of Gebze High Technology Institute (GYTE) were being discussed in a small room on the ground floor of the administration building on the South Campus of Boğaziçi University, the foundations of the Department of Biology were laid. In this context, first of all, with YÖK and MEB scholarships, six of our scientists, who are still working as faculty members today, were sent to the USA and England to do their Master's and Doctorate degrees, primarily in fields related to Molecular Biology. 

Overview

In the following few years, GYTE Biology Department, whose first campus was established in Gebze Muallimköy, was starting its education and research activities with its newly created microbiology-oriented core staff. With the return of young faculty members who completed their doctorates in the early 2000s to GYTE, the Department of Biology, whose research areas expanded, was changed to Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG) in 2010, in line with the conjuncture. Thus, it took its place among the most respected MBG Departments in the country today, with a total of 19 researchers working in the fields of Cell Molecular Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Plant Biotechnology and General Biology. In the MBG Department, research projects in many areas such as cancer, genetic and metabolic diseases, microbial genetics and plant biotechnology are supported by international institutions, TÜBİTAK and BAP funds. 

The experimental animals unit located in the Central Research Laboratory (GTU-MAR) integrated with the MBG building, support units such as in vivo and confocal imaging and proteomics provide basic science and translational research based on genetic and physiological animal models carried out outside the institution, especially Gebze Technological University . 

It also provides an ideal infrastructure environment for content-based research. With the double major program initiated with the Department of Chemistry, it serves the mission of training manpower that will adapt more easily to interdisciplinary scientific studies that are expected to shape the future at the undergraduate level. MBG Department plans to expand these programs further and launch double major programs with the Physics, Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering Departments as soon as possible.
