The General Dental Council (GDC) has indicated that this programme is set to commence in February 2024, with full approval anticipated by the GDC during the final year of the inaugural cohort.

Graduates of the B.Sc. in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy (Hons) will possess the knowledge, skills, and professionalism necessary to thrive in either role, both of which are in high demand across the UK, particularly within the NHS and private healthcare sectors. Upon completion, students may register with the GDC as both dental hygienists and therapists, enabling them to embark on their dental careers immediately.

This dual-role programme is currently undergoing accreditation by the GDC, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive education that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Syllabus

The course structure is designed to progressively build knowledge and skills across three years:

• Year 1: Introduction to Professional Practice, Pre-Clinical Dental Sciences, Clinical Skills Development 1, Clinical Practice, Dental Sciences, Clinical Skills Development 2, Dentistry in Society 1, Research Skills for Oral Health.
• Year 2: Dentistry in Society 2, Integrated Clinical Practice.
• Year 3: Oral Health Dissertation, Preparing for Professional Practice.

The first year focuses on foundational biomedical sciences and clinical skills, while the second year emphasises real-world application through clinical placements. The final year consolidates technical and leadership skills, encouraging independent project-based learning in areas such as education and research methods.

Careers with Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy

Upon graduation, students will be eligible to register with the GDC, allowing them to work as dental hygienists and/or therapists in the UK. The programme prepares graduates for diverse roles within the dental field, equipping them with the skills necessary to excel in various healthcare settings.
