Overview
Throughout the Physical Education (Part-Time) (Hons) course from University of Gloucestershire while traditional activities are integral to the PE curriculum, they don’t suit everyone, so we have scope for more inclusive, innovative and challenging activities to be considered within the school environment.
We’ll help you develop knowledge and understanding in a range of activities, both traditional and non-traditional. We want to develop your interest in both primary and secondary PE to allow you to become a teacher, leader and educator for the future – who inspires young people to participate in PE, physical activity and sport. Throughout the course you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of a broad and varied range of topics based in theory and practice.
We have a progressive programme helps you develop throughout the course. Initially you’ll plan and deliver engaging sessions to ensure you can be inclusive but still challenging for your participants. We’ll look into teaching approaches, inclusive delivery and potential barriers to participation. Moving forwards into your second year we ask you to consider your philosophy of teaching and engage with a broader range of theories. In your final you’ll refine and reflect on your development and consider classroom-based aspects of the PE curriculum delivered in schools. In your second and third years you also get some choice of modules to allow you to specialise in certain topics and areas of interest.
Career opportunities:
Throughout your 3 years of study, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside teaching professionals. We have strong industry links, both locally and nationally – supporting you in your development, providing new opportunities and experiences, and allowing you to put theory into practice.
We also have employability weeks delivered by the Student Futures Team – take part in workshops, enhance your CV and develop your practice. Each year this initiative is broad and varied, enabling you to consider a more holistic approach to your education beyond the academic course content. Students often use these weeks to develop their subject knowledge or listen to speakers who can enhance their professional profile.
Graduates from this course can go on to work as secondary PE teachers or primary school teachers (following PGCE), special educational needs teachers, independent/international school teachers, police and armed forces.
