Regarded as one of the most versatile areas of engineering, chemical engineering combines the worlds of chemistry, biology, mathematics, biomedical, physics, design and process engineering.
Programme options
You can choose either a co-op programme (five years) or a non-co-op programme (four years). Choosing the co-op programme will give you paid work experience in various roles and organizations. Past participants in the co-op programme have worked in sectors including government, health, private industry, and natural resources.
As a chemical engineering student, you can also earn a Certificate in Biomedical Engineering alongside your degree.

What you will learn
In the first year of Dalhousie University's Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering programme, you will develop a broad foundation in engineering with courses in math, engineering, science and design. In your second year you will enter your chosen discipline and begin to take chemical engineering-specific courses that focus on chemical processes and fluid flow. In your third year, you’ll concentrate on chemical engineering technical areas and have the opportunity to start co-op. Your final year will provide you with the opportunity to choose three technical elective courses to tailor your studies to your interests. The Certificate in Biomedical Engineering is also available to chemical engineering students.
The Chemical Engineering curriculum provides you with a broad background in chemistry, physics and mathematics.
The detailed knowledge of engineering principles and practice you gain during your degree will prepare you to explore a wide range of activities in the field of chemical engineering, such as operations, design, research & development, and management.
