Overview
The first two years cover general biologic principles, human anatomy and physiology, disease mechanisms, and advanced methods in biomedical research. In the third year, students can choose to enrol in one of the two curricula: biological bases of human diseases (Padua) or environmental influences on human health (Bologna). Biology of Human and Environmental Health is offered by the University of Padua.
Career Opportunities
Graduates can continue their education, even abroad, or enter the job market as biomedical/environmental Research Assistants able to apply standardised experimental methods, analyse data, present the results, and produce written reports. They can also sit the national qualifying exam to join the professional register of Biologists (Junior Biologist).

1st Year: Fundamentals of mathematics; Chemistry; Principles of Biology; Physics with applications to biological systems; Biochemistry 1; Biochemistry 2; Biostatistics; Microbiology.
2nd Year: Molecular Biology and Genetics; Cells, Tissues, Embryology and Development; Global Change and Human Biology; Computational methods in Bioinformatics; Anatomy and Physiology; Introduction to environmental health; Pathology.
3rd Year:
- Human Health curriculum (at the University of Padua): Clinical and Molecular Biology; Human Genetics; Epidemiology, Public Health and Bioethics; Immunology and Immunopathology; Pharmacology and pharmacogenomics
- Environmental Health curriculum (at the University of Bologna): Environmental Physiology; Botany and Plant Environment Interactions; Molecular basis of genome editing; Climate change microbiology in human health; Plant metabolism for human health and nutrition

General requirements
To be eligible for admission to a Bachelor’s degree or a single-cycle degree, you need a minimum 12-year school record.
If you have been awarded a final diploma after a shorter programme of study (i.e. less than 12 years), in order to become eligible you must:
- have attended at least 1 (in case of 11 years of schooling) or 2 (in case of 10 years of schooling) years of academic studies and passed all the scheduled exams.
OR
- have obtained a post-secondary qualification in a non-University higher education institution, certifying the additional one or two years of education.
OR
- have successfully completed one or two year preparatory courses (Foundation courses) to compensate for the missing years of schooling
