Overview
The Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP) at the University of Saskatchewan provides a comprehensive pathway for students to earn a Bachelor of Education degree. This programme is specifically designed to address the cultural needs of First Nations students and their wider communities through a holistic teaching approach.
Students can choose to specialise in either early and middle years education or secondary schooling. The curriculum is highly flexible, allowing individuals to select two distinct teaching areas and various electives to suit their professional goals. This ensures graduates are well-prepared for the specific demands of the Saskatchewan school system.
Why Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP) at University of Saskatchewan?
Established in 1972, this is the largest First Nations-specific teacher education programme in the country. It offers a unique, family-oriented learning environment supported by the expertise of Elders, Wisdom Carriers, and dedicated counsellors. The institution focuses on reinforcing cultural identity and awareness among its students.
The programme is delivered both on the main Saskatoon campus and through various community-based cohorts across the province. This decentralised approach allows students to learn within their own communities. Facilities and partnerships ensure that teacher candidates gain practical experience in First Nations schools during their studies.
