Overview
The Geography and Environmental Studies programme at the University of Regina offers an in-depth exploration of the spatial relationships between human societies and the natural world. This comprehensive curriculum addresses critical global challenges including climate change, resource depletion, and urban development.
Students can choose between different degree pathways depending on their academic interests and career goals. The Bachelor of Arts stream focuses heavily on human impact and social studies, while the Bachelor of Science stream emphasises physical geography and earth science processes.
The curriculum is designed to sharpen observational and analytical skills through a blend of theoretical classroom learning and practical application.
Why Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Regina?
The university provides a supportive learning environment characterised by small class sizes and one-to-one instruction from expert faculty. Research specialities within the department include cartography, eco-tourism, climate change impacts, and the study of fossil fuels and energy transitions.
Practical experience is a cornerstone of the student experience, with opportunities to participate in a co-operative education programme. These work terms allow students to gain professional competency in both public and private sectors while establishing valuable industry contacts.
The department maintains specialised facilities to support advanced learning, including a dedicated map library and the Environmental Research and Response Applications (TERRA) Lab. Students also benefit from the PARC Tree-Ring lab for specific environmental research projects.
Field-based learning is integrated into the programme, with trips often focusing on the unique physical environment of southern Saskatchewan. International opportunities have previously included field studies in Berlin, Germany, to explore urban geography and historical development.
