Overview
The primary objective of the B.Sc. in Mental Health Nursing (Hons) programme is to foster mental health and wellness by equipping students with the necessary skills to provide nursing care to individuals suffering from mental illnesses and distress. The course also emphasises the importance of supporting families and communities in addressing mental health issues. Graduates will work closely with individuals, families, and communities to prevent mental health problems, enabling many to lead fulfilling lives within their communities. A key aspect of a mental health nurse's role is the establishment of therapeutic relationships with patients and their families, which is crucial for effective care.
The programme comprises 76 weeks of theoretical classroom instruction combined with 81 weeks of clinical placements. Notably, there is a 36-week continuous rostered clinical placement, which may occur either locally or internationally. This placement encompasses a diverse range of clinical environments, including acute mental health care, care for the elderly, specialised care, general adult nursing, and collaboration with both voluntary and statutory organisations. Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will be eligible for registration in the Psychiatric Division of the Nurses' Register maintained by Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann.
The nursing courses are conducted in the state-of-the-art Sólás building at the MTU Kerry North Campus, featuring technology-enhanced classrooms, practical skills laboratories, and computer suites. The partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE) provides students with access to a wide array of clinical placement opportunities throughout counties Kerry, Cork, and beyond. Throughout the programme, students receive comprehensive support from both university and clinical staff, ensuring a robust educational experience. Additionally, ERASMUS opportunities are available for those studying mental health nursing at MTU.
