Overview
This programme aims to cultivate proficient nursing professionals capable of delivering exceptional care across various environments. The curriculum emphasises collaborative practice, where students learn to work alongside other healthcare professionals while tailoring individualised care plans in partnership with patients. The focus on effective communication and empathy is integral to understanding the patient experience of health and illness.
Over the duration of the four-year course, students will explore critical areas such as professional and ethical practice, holistic care approaches, and the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The programme incorporates 76 weeks of classroom instruction combined with 81 weeks of clinical placements, culminating in a 36-week continuous internship. This structure ensures that students gain extensive hands-on experience in diverse clinical settings, including general medical and surgical nursing, accident and emergency, outpatient care, and paediatric nursing.
Students will have the opportunity to engage in clinical practice both locally, in counties Kerry and Cork, and internationally, providing a broad spectrum of experiences. The nursing programme is delivered in the state-of-the-art Sólás building at the MTU Kerry North Campus, equipped with advanced classrooms, practical skills laboratories, and computer suites. The partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE) and Bon Secours Hospital in Tralee enhances the clinical placement experience, offering students access to a wide range of facilities and support from both university and clinical staff.
