Overview
The BA Primary and SEND Education with QTS (Hons) course from University of Sunderland prepares you to teach in mainstream primary schools, special schools, or alternative provision, with a strong focus on supporting pupils with SEND. Alongside the core training of our teacher education courses, you'll explore specialist strategies for working with children with autism, learning difficulties, and complex needs.
What you'll learn
You’ll study SEND modules and gain hands-on experience through placements in special schools, SEND units, or resourced provisions – supported by a dedicated SEND placement officer. These experiences will help you adapt your teaching to overcome barriers to learning and meet diverse pupil needs.
This SEND degree awards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), so upon successful completion, you’ll be fully qualified to teach in any state-maintained primary school in England. With strong demand for skilled teachers, most students on this course go on to teach in mainstream schools, special schools, or in alternative provision when they graduate. Some choose to become Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOS), a key role which requires an additional qualification after starting the job.
