Overview
This flexible course in Physical Education and Sport and Exercise Science with Foundation Year from Canterbury Christ Church University will enable you to develop a high level of skills and knowledge in physical education, and sport and exercise science theory and practice, so that you're prepared to enter a variety of exciting careers.
Whether you're considering becoming a PE teacher or want to follow a sports-related career such as a development officer, coach or therapist, this diverse course will stretch your body and mind, helping you reach your full potential.
During the foundation year, you'll gain an initiation to education and human development and you'll develop the skills needed to study at degree level.
As you progress through the course, you'll have opportunities to work with or observe professionals and industry experts and will use your experience as a basis for developing your skills and knowledge.
The design and structure of the course enables you to take a flexible and broad approach to your future career. You'll be able to study modules that have a focus on a particular career (e.g. teaching) or you can develop the knowledge and skills needed for a wider range of careers.
You'll examine the wide context of physical education at all ages and you'll study the sport science disciplines of physiology, psychology, biomechanics and sociology.
If you'd like to gain valuable work experience, you can select the Year 3 Professional Experience in PE and Sport module where you'll be able to work in a setting of your choice.
You may also have the opportunity to attend outdoor education centres as part of the Learning in Alternative Environments module or experience other educational settings, such as primary, secondary and special schools, through the PE in Educational Contexts module and Inclusive Pedagogy module.
Your future career
The Physical Education and Sport and Exercise Science degree opens up both primary and secondary routes into teaching, through PGCE or Schools Direct, and prepares you for further postgraduate study at all levels through to PhD. You may wish to continue your studies on the MA Physical Education and Physical Activity by Research.
It also prepares you for roles in sport, physical activity, health and fitness and the leisure industry. In addition it provides an excellent foundation for careers in the public sector, including the medical professions (cardiac rehabilitation, physiotherapy and health promotion), while both the armed and police forces look favourably upon our graduates.

- Applicants should normally have 32 UCAS Tariff points. We will also welcome applications from students with few or no formal Level 3 qualifications who wish to return to education and applicants may be asked to attend an interview.
