Overview

Popular music is at the heart of this course and you'll be developing strong skills in performance, instrumental technique, songwriting and composition. You'll have opportunities to perform, record, produce and compose music in specialist facilities.

What you'll study

In Year 2 of the Commercial Music course from Canterbury Christ Church University, you'll take a combination of core and optional modules.

During the core modules, you'll explore performance for stage and screen, music enterprise and entrepreneurship, popular music analysis and performance, and solo performance.

Optional modules are related to media music, commercial songwriting, performance techniques (improvisation in theory and practice), applied music psychology, and music and culture.

In Year 3, you'll continue to take a combination of core and optional modules.

Core modules are related to performance in the recording studio and advanced solo performance.

During the optional modules, you can carry out an independent project and study areas linked to film music, performance techniques, individual songwriting, instrumental and vocal teaching, the future of the music business and music for therapy and wellbeing.

Your future career

The Commercial Music course aims to prepare you as a creative practitioner in performance, production or commercial composition (as a songwriter, or for media, for instance). Graduates have, for example, gone on to work as freelance performers and producers, DJ’s, songwriters, web designers, live sound engineers and freelance instrumental and vocal tutors. Some graduates have elected to continue their education by progressing on to Masters’ degree qualifications and others have decided to train to teach in schools or further education.
