Overview
Biology is the science of life. You will study fundamental concepts of life and its different forms, from simple microbes to highly complex animals and plants. As a Mount student, you will also enjoy a close-knit community of students and faculty, small class sizes, and life in Halifax.
Program Options
Students of the Biology program at Mount Saint Vincent University will graduate with a BSc or a BSc Honours degree after four years of study. Biology may also be taken as a combined major, concentration or minor. You will develop a solid background in natural sciences such as chemistry and physics as well as transferable skills like:
- Analytical and scientific thinking
- Problem solving
- Analysis and interpretation of data sets
- Summarizing data and communicating results through written reports or verbal presentations
Career
Graduates can pursue careers in the animal and human health professions, environmental sciences, resource and wildlife management, journalism, public relations, library science, biotechnology, epidemiology and public health, education, public service, conservation and research.
Students interested in research can satisfy their curiosity and learn about scientific culture and communication by becoming involved in faculty research. This may take the form of one or more 4000-level courses in directed literature, laboratory or field research extending over a single term or a full academic year (BSc Honours). Alternatively, students can be part-time or full-time research assistants. The department’s objectives for students in biology and non-biology programs are the same:- to include students in our community of biology scholars and to teach them about scientific philosophy and culture;
- to share up-to-date fundamental and specialized biological knowledge;
- to satisfy your personal interests and support the career ambitions of students;
- to develop the analytical, critical and creative intellectual skills od students;
- to make students effective communicators of science;
- to develop in students some degree of personal responsibility for social welfare as it relates to biology.

General requirements
High School Applicants
- Applicants for admission from high school must submit a completed application, the application fee, and have an official transcript of the high school record forwarded directly from the high school to the Admissions Office.
- Applicants who have previously attended another post-secondary college or university and those attending while making an application to the Mount may be eligible for transfer credits. Applicants must submit official documents of all previous academic work regardless of whether they are seeking recognition of transfer credits for a particular program. Students who fail to declare prior study or to supply such documentation may be denied admission to the University or be dismissed upon subsequent discovery.
