Overview

Part of the same mammal group, the primates – apes, monkeys, tarsiers, lemurs and lorises – are our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. They provide a window through which we can interpret human evolutionary origins, yet many now face extinction from habitat loss and degradation.

The only specialist course of its kind in the UK, this  Zoology With Primatology (Hons) degree from Bangor University  prepares you for pure or applied primate research, to support primate conservation in the wild, or manage primate welfare in zoos and sanctuaries. Broad zoological training sets advanced and specialised knowledge of primates in the fullest evolutionary context.

Careers

You could go on to conduct research into behaviour, conservation, diseases affecting primates or the evolutionary origin of primates or behaviours. Perhaps you’d prefer to work in zoos, sanctuaries, safari parks and other animal centres, or raise funds, awareness and educate others about primates.

Some of our graduates have gone on to win prestigious and very competitive PhD studentships from the Natural Environment Research Council UK to continue their primatological training and research at Bangor. Examples of roles they have secured include: become an animal keeper at Longleat Safari Park; a primate keeper at Monkey World in Dorset; and a Field Operations Manager for the Bulindi Chimpanzee and Community Project.
