Overview
This LLB Law (Scots) with French (Hons) from University of Dundee qualifies you to move on to the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice and train as either a solicitor or an advocate in Scotland.
You can also choose to apply to our Dual Qualifying degree. This also enables you to proceed to qualify to practice law in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
You'll also study one French module per semester in each year, either as a beginner or at intensive level if you have previously studied the language at Higher/A-Level.
Along with your studies we encourage our students to join one of our Law societies:
- The Dundee University Law Society is one of the biggest and most active societies on campus and helps build your Law network.
- The Law Review is a publication run by students and reviewed by academics to ensure high academic standards. This is an ideal opportunity to gain legal editing and writing experience.
- Our Mooting society is a great place to practice debate. Members have represented Scotland at the International Court of Justice.
- The Telders competition provides an opportunity for law students with an interest in public international law to hone their skills in front of leading experts.
Careers
Our close links to employers will help you to find a job when you graduate.
A new qualification route to practicing as a solicitor in England and Wales is currently (June 2019) being developed. This will be a centralised Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). This LLB course will still enable you to pursue qualification as a solicitor until after these reforms come in. For more information on these reforms and what they might mean for your journey to practice, visit the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
We also run an annual Legal Recruitment Fair. This attracts high profile employers and organisations wishing to to meet students to recruit to graduate positions.
Many of our graduates have gone onto prestigious careers including at the Court of Session, the Old Bailey, the European Court of Human Rights and the UN.
Studying a language is one of the best ways to make yourself even more employable. Our language graduates have gone on to work all over the world in a range of areas such as:
- teaching English as a second language
- publishing
