Geography and Environmental Science (Hons) University of Dundee

Overview

Through this BSc  Geography and Environmental Science (Hons) from University of Dundee you will analyse and understand major challenges facing the world, and develop creative skills in problem solving, presentation, and communication.

You will focus on topical and relevant issues such as climate change, pollution of land and water and the management of natural resources.

In Environmental Science, you will gain the knowledge and skills to help build a cleaner future and address the large-scale challenges facing human existence on earth.

In Geography you will study both social and physical sciences across three broad themes: creating just communities and places, shaping environmental futures, and geospatial and digital methods.

You will also have the opportunity to go on field trips, and to work with partner organisations to help them solve problems that they are currently facing.

The course covers areas including:

• hydrology
• remote sensing
• geology
• geomorphology
• oceanography and physics
• environmental planning and management
• life sciences including chemistry and biology

We have our own teaching spaces, laboratory, field equipment pool and specialist software like GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and R-statistics to support your learning.

The student-led Geography and Environmental Society also has a programme of activities to help you become part of our community. 

Careers

Many of their graduates build careers in areas that draw directly on the specialist geographical knowledge and skills they develop through their degree. Areas of employment include:

• land and water management
• flood risk management
• development and environmental consultancies
• housing and social welfare organisations
• local and central government
• tourism and conservation
• the geospatial industry, using GIS or satellite remote sensing

This course will also help you develop the wider graduate skills and attributes that many employers value: problem solving, IT and communication, analysis, and working with partners. Our students are also successful in securing places and funding for advanced postgraduate degrees.
