Overview
In this MA Geography and Economics (Hons) from University of Dundee you study both social and physical sciences to analyse and understand major challenges facing the world. You will develop creative skills in problem solving, presentation, and communication.
You can specialise in human geography or physical geography, or to combine elements of both. In addition you can study other social science or humanities subjects.
You will also have the opportunity to go on field trips, and to work with partner organisations to help them solve problems that they are currently facing.
Their teaching is based on the research carried out in the department and is focused on three broad themes: creating just communities and places, shaping environmental futures, and geospatial and digital methods.
You will cover specialisms within these themes including:
- health and well being
- city futures
- geopolitics and power
- tourism and globalisation
- policing and security
- hazards and risk
The student-led Geography and Environmental Society also has a programme of activities to help you become part of our community.
Economists examine how societies attempt to make the best use of their scarce resources, so that they can advise governments, individuals, and companies on how to improve decisions and outcomes.
Traditionally economists advise on investment, inflation, interest rates, and production. Increasingly however, economics takes a wider focus with many economists examining climate change, inequality, and improving healthcare.
Careers
Studies by the Royal Geographical Society show that Geography degrees are an excellent basis for developing the transferable skills and knowledge that many employers value. You will be skilled in communication, problem solving, analysis and interpretation.
Equally a Geography degree provides distinctive attributes that can be drawn on more directly in many career pathways, such as skills in spatial analysis, experience working across scales, and integrating across physical and social sciences.
Many of our graduates pursue Geography-related careers in development or environmental consultancies, government, tourism, planning and teaching.
