Overview
The Adult Nursing (Hons) from University of Dundee 's aim is to help you develop into a compassionate and knowledgeable registered adult nurse, ready to take on the exciting challenge of working in any modern healthcare environment. For the BSc (Hons) version of this course you will complete an honours project on a topic of your choosing.
Nurses work as part of a team alongside doctors, therapists, pharmacists, and healthcare assistants. You will work with patients and their families supporting them through challenging situations.
You will spend 50% of your time learning on campus and the other 50% on placements in hospitals and community settings. Your placements help you develop the hands-on skills needed to work in healthcare.
You will attend workshops and interactive sessions at the Clinical Skills Centre, in Ninewells Medical School. You will build your confidence by participating in acted patient scenarios which take place in our state of the art simulated hospital ward.
Completing this course gives you both an academic and professional qualification that leads to you becoming a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Teaching
Because hospitals run 24/7, so do nurses and this is reflected in our teaching.
You will work 37.5 hours a week, with shifts in your hospital and community placements. This may involve significant travel to get to some placements. If you are entitled to the SAAS student nurse bursary, you can claim back any travel expenses over £5 per day, if the cheapest route of travel is taken. If you are not entitled to the bursary, you are expected to pay your own travel.
The academic year for nurses is longer than other courses. It is 45 weeks long, meaning you get seven weeks of annual leave which is fixed for the duration of your course.
A typical week is made up of time spent in lectures, clinical skills laboratory, small tutorials, and private study.
You will work together with students from all three fields of nursing and learn through a variety of methods including case-based learning, evidence-based learning, inter-professional education and clinical skills simulation.
Careers
Qualified nurses can work in a diverse range of environments and develop their careers in clinical practice, education, research, management and education. Nurses can work in hospital settings or in the community either with the NHS or in the Independent sector.
