Students in this Physical Education (Hons) course from UCFB x GIS will develop the practical and theoretical understanding of the two key areas needed for physical educators; they will become experts in physical activity and in the areas of teaching and sport pedagogy.
Students will fully explore the fundamentals of physical education and sport pedagogy, including applied practical skills, child development, pedagogical skills, sport policy and practice. Practical and academic studies analyse the effects of exercise on the body and undertake a range of physical activities experienced at different levels and ages of pupils.
Students will explore the national curriculum and the growing importance of physical activity and will cover a range of sporting options including the six key areas that schools require; athletics, games, gymnastics, dance, swimming, outdoor & adventure activities.
Weekly work within local schools is a key feature of this course and many of the in-class sessions will be supporting students’ own practical placements and providing them with information and reflection time to learn from their real life teaching experiences. Physical activity study requires students who are physically fit and able and who have the ability to read and study independently, manage their time effectively and marry theory with practice. This degree responds to the changing demands of physical education, combining both the practical and theoretical study of the techniques and skills involved in the teaching and learning of sport. Students will learn the skills to be an effective sports leader, and can aspire to career opportunities in roles including sports coach, teaching assistant, nutritionist and sports teacher.
