Overview
The flexible BSc Geography (Hons) from University of Dundee allows you to specialise in Human Geography or Physical Geography, or to combine elements of both.
Thr=e teaching is based on the research carried out in the department and is focused on three broad themes: creating just communities and places, shaping environmental futures, and geospatial and digital methods.
BSc Geography will cover specialisms within these themes including:
- glacial and hydrological landscapes and processes
- biogeography and reconstructing past environments
- natural hazards and risk and in the application of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and remote sensing
You will investigate issues in our changing world, including climate change, sustainability, land degradation and patterns of inequality. Throughout your degree there will be an emphasis on gaining practical skills and an emphasis on ‘doing’ geography.
Laboratories, field equipment, and specialist software like GIS (Geographic Information Systems) will support your learning.
The student-led Geography and Environmental Society also has a programme of activities to help you become part of our community.
Teaching
Most modules in Levels 1 and 2 have three lectures and one tutorial or workshop group meeting each week. You’ll also be able to study additional subjects, such as environmental science, environmental sustainability, psychology, politics, economics, philosophy, or a language.
At Levels 3 and 4 you will have fewer lectures and will learn from tutorials, seminars, local field and laboratory work, and workshops.
Fieldwork is an important part of our course and we make use of the fantastic landscapes within easy reach of the campus for local day trips. We also travel further afield into the Cairngorms, and to Iceland or SE Spain for example, for week-long residential trips.
Careers
Studies by the Royal Geographical Society show that Geography degrees are an excellent basis for developing the wider graduate skills and attributes that many employers value: problem solving, IT and communication, analysis, and working with partners. Our students are also successful in securing places and funding for advanced postgraduate degrees.
Equally, many of the graduates build careers in areas that draw directly on the specialist geographical knowledge and skills they develop through their degree. Areas of employment include:
- environmental consultancies
- survey and mapping
- risk analysis
- land and water management
- local and central government
- the geospatial industry, using GIS or satellite remote sensing
Accreditation
This course has been accredited by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG).
