Overview
Molecular genetics is the study of genes at a molecular level. It's the study of their structure and function. Through this study, we see how they pass on information and how they make sure other processes in cells are regulated effectively.
In the Molecular Genetics (Hons) programme from University of Dundee , the curriculum is shaped by the work of world-leading researchers to make sure you’re learning the latest advances. This will also help you gain an understanding of the fundamentals of the field.
Throughout the duration of the course, you have the flexibility to pick modules that appeal to you, highlighting to future employers where your interests lie.
At Levels 1 and 2, you’ll study a broad range of life sciences topics such as:
- genetics
- cell biology
- biological organisation
- molecular mechanisms and processes
You will develop your practical skills such as laboratory skills, data analysis, and experiment design. This will prepare you for designing and carrying out projects later in your course.
At Levels 3 and 4, you’ll focus more on key aspects of molecular genetics and topics like advanced gene regulation and expression, before completing an in-depth research project around one chosen area of the current world-class research in Life Sciences.
Careers and opportunities
A degree in molecular genetics opens the door to many career options. Graduates are in great demand in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, food, biotechnology and healthcare industries, with openings for laboratory work or in the marketing, sales and management areas. Comparable openings can be found in the various agricultural, medical and veterinary research institutes, hospitals and the scientific Civil Service.
