Overview
About the programme
Along with technical instruction, in-depth and constructive critiques, mentoring and extensive hands-on experience, you will develop into a self-aware and mature film practitioner.
The Film and Screen Arts program offered by Emily Carr University of Art + Design provides a theoretical, historical and critical framework within which students master the conceptual and practical skills for producing film, video, moving image, sound and other media works for screens: theatrical, televisual exhibition and distribution platforms such as online, festival distribution, gallery exhibition, and public art presentation. It prepares students for professional practice in film and media, and for graduate work at the university level. Students are encouraged to develop their artistic voice within a context of artistic expression, formal exploration, and engagement with social and political issues. A dual emphasis on studio and critical and cultural studies endows the student with breadth across these areas.
Our priority is critical making, having our students find their voice and produce media works that have informed content and relevant form. We teach our students to have a depth of conceptual understanding and technical facility with decisions around their choice of form and content that best expresses their ideas and stories. Their work is disseminated in the best medium for what they are creating and building toward, be it cinema-based, gallery practice and/or web oriented.
