About

The Bachelor of Arts in Social Care Work (Hons) at Munster Technological University is a full-time programme that spans three years. This degree equips students with the essential skills and knowledge required for a career in social care, focusing on the needs of diverse populations and promoting advocacy and support for vulnerable groups.

Overview

Social Care Work, as defined by CORU, adopts a relationship-based methodology aimed at the intentional planning and delivery of care, protection, psychosocial support, and advocacy for individuals and groups facing marginalisation, disadvantage, or special needs. The significance of Social Care Work in Irish society is profound, as it addresses systemic inequalities and paves the way for a more equitable and inclusive community where every individual is respected and valued. The programme at Munster Technological University (MTU) employs a multidisciplinary framework, incorporating elements from psychology, sociology, social policy, and the creative arts. This diverse approach empowers students to effectively respond to the varied experiences of all stakeholders within the social care sector. The curriculum is designed to merge theoretical knowledge with practical application, emphasising ethical and evidence-based practices. A student-centred teaching methodology is utilised, which encompasses a variety of assessment techniques, enabling learners to gain professional insights into the roles of a Social Care Worker, understand the needs of different care populations, and adhere to CORU's standards of proficiency during their supervised practice. Throughout the course, students cultivate an inclusive and empathetic understanding of the requirements of individuals across various care settings and backgrounds. The programme prioritises the voices of those receiving support, ensuring that their perspectives are integral to the learning experience. Additionally, students develop essential care practice skills, including advocacy and communication, as well as creative and recreational strategies for effective practice. Health and wellbeing initiatives are also integrated into the curriculum. Work placements are a critical component of the programme, allowing students to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in class to real-world scenarios. These placements foster reflective practice and provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics involved in social care work, particularly within a multidisciplinary team context. The BA in Social Care Work (Hons) is accredited by CORU, the regulatory body for health and social care professionals in Ireland. Graduates of this programme are well-prepared for various career paths within the social care sector. They typically find employment in supportive roles across a range of settings, including community services, residential care, and day service environments. Social Care Workers often collaborate with other professionals, such as Social Workers, to provide comprehensive support to diverse groups, including children and adults with disabilities, individuals experiencing homelessness, and families facing social challenges. Additionally, graduates are eligible to pursue further studies, such as the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Care Work or postgraduate courses in fields like Occupational Therapy and Community Development. The programme's structure ensures that students are not only equipped with the theoretical foundations needed for their careers but also the practical skills and experience that are essential in the field of social care.
