Overview
Business Information Systems is an interdisciplinary programme that merges business acumen with technological expertise, designed to prepare students for the dynamic field of information technology in business contexts. This degree focuses on developing the necessary skills to manage and utilise information systems effectively across various business environments. The curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of both business principles and technological applications, ensuring graduates are well-equipped for the challenges of the modern workplace. The programme's content is divided evenly between business and technology, allowing students to gain a deep understanding of both fields. Key areas of study include management principles, digital marketing strategies, financial and management accounting, information communication technology, and the strategic implementation of computer applications. Students will also explore enterprise resource planning systems, systems integration, legal frameworks, entrepreneurship, international business, project management, systems analysis, design and development methodologies, big data analytics, and cloud computing solutions. Assessment throughout the course is multifaceted, comprising end-of-module examinations alongside continuous assessments and project work, enabling students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in practical scenarios. The programme's structure is designed to foster both theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring students graduate with a balanced skill set. In the third year, students have the unique opportunity to engage in a work placement or opt for a study abroad experience during the second semester. The work placement, which lasts a minimum of 15 weeks, is designed to provide real-world experience in an IT-related role within a business environment. This practical exposure is complemented by guidance from both on-site supervisors and academic staff, ensuring a supportive learning experience. For those choosing the study abroad option, coordination with the International Office at MTU and the partner university is essential to select appropriate modules, subject to departmental approval. This flexibility allows students to broaden their horizons and gain international perspectives on business information systems. The first year of the programme introduces students to fundamental concepts, including basic programming, the role of managers within business environments, and the significance of information systems in supporting business operations. Students will also gain hands-on experience with essential software applications, enhancing their technical skills in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and database management. Upon completion of the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Business Information Systems, graduates will possess a diverse skill set applicable to various roles in the industry. Career opportunities include positions such as business analyst, IT consultant, project manager, systems administrator, and roles in business analytics and IT support. Graduates can find employment across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, food processing, software development, and financial services. For those interested in further studies, graduates achieving the requisite academic performance may pursue postgraduate courses at MTU or other institutions, opening doors to advanced career opportunities in the field.
