Overview
Biomedical engineering is an innovative field that merges engineering with an understanding of the human body's functions, whether in a state of health or illness. In Ireland, the medical device industry is flourishing, with over 300 companies contributing significantly to the economy by exporting around €12.6 billion worth of products annually. This sector employs approximately 32,000 individuals, accounting for 8% of the nation’s total merchandise exports. The products developed within this industry range from prosthetic devices that enhance quality of life to critical medical instruments such as pacemakers, orthopaedic implants, and diagnostic tools. Biomedical engineers are integral to the design, sourcing, and maintenance of medical equipment and services in clinical settings. The BEng (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering at Munster Technological University covers a comprehensive curriculum that includes the design and development of artificial joints, medical diagnostic equipment, and the implantation of biomaterials or devices within the human body. This programme prepares students to engage in various stages of product development, from conception through to manufacturing, technical support, and interaction with medical professionals in clinical environments. The course emphasises the application of engineering principles to biological systems, necessitating a solid foundation in physiology, anatomy, and biological sciences. Students will engage with a blend of biological systems, biomedical devices, and clinical engineering alongside traditional mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineering disciplines. Collaborative projects with industry partners, including medical professionals and the Biomedical Engineering Unit at Cork University Hospital, enhance the learning experience. Students also have the opportunity to undertake work placements or internships, either in Ireland or internationally, in research laboratories or with partner institutions across Europe, including France, Germany, Italy, and the UK. The BEng (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering is fully accredited by Engineers Ireland, meeting the standards required for a Bachelor’s degree at Level 8. However, further study is necessary to achieve the educational qualifications for Chartered Engineer status. The first year of the programme introduces students to essential topics such as:
- Engineering Physics: Applying physics concepts to engineering challenges.
- Properties of Materials: Selecting appropriate materials for engineering applications.
- Biomechanics: Examining the forces acting on joints and muscles.
- Engineering Chemistry: Integrating chemistry principles into engineering.
- Thermo/Fluid Mechanics: Understanding fluid systems in engineering contexts.
- Computer-Aided Design (CAD): Learning design techniques similar to those in Leaving Certificate subjects.
- Practical Manufacturing of Metal Components.
- Anatomy, Mathematics, and Biology.
Entry into this programme requires a strong academic background, with standard applicants needing to achieve the necessary CAO points and meet minimum entry criteria, including a Leaving Certificate with specific grades in relevant subjects. Graduates of this programme can pursue careers in the medical device sector, focusing on the design and manufacture of medical devices, research roles, or clinical engineering positions within hospitals. Additionally, students may opt to continue their studies by transferring to a Master’s programme in Biomedical Engineering after completing their undergraduate degree, provided they meet the required academic standards.
