Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

The Civil Engineering (Honours) programme of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University aims to nurture students as all-round civil engineers who are ready to work on engineering projects with commercial, social, legal and political complexities.

Programme Characteristics

The attractive features of this programme are as follows:

Four-year full-time comprehensive programme with a wide range of Core and Elective Subjects;

Opportunity to study abroad for one to two semesters in subsidized exchange programmes at internationally famed universities;

Practical training modules at the University's technologically advanced Industrial Centre;

Summer industrial placement in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland or overseas between the third and fourth years of the programme; and

Scholarships available for students with excellent academic performance.

Career Prospects

Our graduates are well-prepared for employment as graduate engineers and receive rewarding salaries in both the public and private sectors, such as the Buildings Department, Civil Engineering and Development Department, Drainage Services Department, Environmental Protection Department, Highways Department, Housing Department, Transport Department and Water Supplies Department of the HKSAR, as engineering consultants and contractors.

Programme Structure

The Year 1 common curriculum covers basic knowledge and latest issues in the field of civil engineering and sustainable development.
The Year 2 and 3 curriculum covers comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in civil engineering, including in environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering, and in construction management.
The Year 4 curriculum offers a wide range of advanced elective subjects that enable students to gain in-depth exposure to fields of particular interest to them. Students complete a Design Project, which requires them to integrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their previous 3 years of study, and an Individual Capstone Project, which provides them with research experience that advances their intellectual development.

For those who are applying on the basis of A-Level qualifications: E in 3 A-Level subjects OR E in 2 A-Level and 2 AS-Level subjects;

For those who are applying on the basis of International Baccalaureate (IB): a minimum score of 24 with at least grade 4 in 2 Higher Level (HL) subjects;

For those who are applying on the basis of other qualifications: an appropriate Diploma passed with credit or an appropriate Higher Certificate from a recognised institution; an appropriate Associate Degree / Higher Diploma from a recognised institution; holder of other non-local qualifications (please refer to our Guidelines on Non-local Qualifications for more details about our general requirements for such qualifications)
