While the former comprises various language systems of English such as sound, word, grammar, meaning and usage, the latter encompasses practical skills in dealing with the cultural dimension of translation, accounting for the differences between the English and Chinese languages and handling translated texts in specialized areas, including law, business, public administration and media.
The Language Studies and Translation (Honours) programme of the Hong Kong Metropolitan University intends to bring students to a level of proficiency that will enable them to be linguistically and analytically equipped to be language professionals and translators. Graduates are able to complete extended translation assignments and deal with linguistically and culturally-related problems in translation, and to comprehend, analyse and explain complicate language phenomena and to perform various language tasks confidently as other practising language professionals.
Career prospects
This programme prepares students for a career as a professional translator or any language practitioner such as a language teacher. There is a variety of jobs available to the Language anf Translation graduate in Hong Kong: in the civil service, public utilities, education, the mass media nad commerce.
Further studies
Opportunities area available for the graduates of this programme to advance to postgraduate studies in Hong Kong and abroad. Some students continue to study for a master's degree by coursework or research after graduation; and others pursue postgraduate studies part-time while working full-time. Some choose to study further in the field of language studies, legal translation and applied translation, while others study another subject area, such as linguistics, applied linguistics, bilingual studies and education according to their career plans.

General requirements
- Applicants with Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) qualifications are required to obtain Level 3 or above in Chinese Language and English Language, as well as Level 2 or above in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and an elective subject3 (or equivalent).
- Applicants with local academic qualifications other than HKDSE are required to:
- Complete Year 1 study of a recognized Associate Degree or Higher Diploma programme; or
- Obtain Grade E or above in AS Chinese Language & Culture4 and Use of English, and 2 AL / 1 AL plus 2 AS / 4 AS subjects in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (or equivalent).
- Applicants with non-local academic qualifications are required to obtain:
- Grade E or above in 2 AL / 1AL plus 2 AS subjects5 in the General Certificate of Education AL / International AL; or
- An overall minimum score of 24 in the International Baccalaureate Diploma; or
- Other equivalent overseas academic qualifications (as determined by the University).
