Overview

Students conceptualise and programme soft- and hardware-based musical instruments and create audiovisual installations. The audio designer's instrument is his computer.

In the Audio Design at SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences of their studies, students get to know the basics of sound design, sound engineering and music. In the first four semesters, they gain aesthetic, compositional, sound design, sound engineering and music technology skills. 

From the 6th semester onwards, students develop these skills further and specialize themselves by choosing projects from the areas of music technology and art, music production as well as sound design and composition. Artistic individuality, individual support and practical implementation of what has been learned are key elements of the B.A. Audio Design programme.

Career Perspectives

Audio designers compose music of various genres, create digital sound designs and acoustic special effects, realize speech productions and manage sound recordings with bands and ensembles. They write songs, orchestrate their own arrangements and develop digital musical instruments and apps. Audio designers work either freelance or are employed in a variety of industries.

Programme Structure

  • In the first semester, students dive into the world of audio design. 
  • In the second semester, students learn more about music theory and can use their knowledge of sound design and composition for their practical projects. 
  • In the third semester, students develop their own compositions, but also analyse current works. 
  • In the fourth semester students get to know the basics of arranging and deepen their compositional skills. 
  • In the fifth semester, students will either do an internship or exchange semester. 
  • In the sixth semester, students choose a project from one of the following areas music technology & art, music production, sound design & composition and can choose their individual focus according to their own interests. 
  • In the seventh semester, students chose another project from one of the above mentioned areas, but usually carry it out as an individual project.

English Language Requirements

This programme may require students to demonstrate proficiency in English.

General Requirements

We will specifically be looking for: 

  • a strong motivation to express yourself and to design
  • a solid understanding of computer-based realisation of music and sound
  • basic theoretical and practical knowledge of popular music

  • Letter of motivation stating: Why are you interested in studying at the hdpk? What are your expectations? What are your professional perspectives? 
  • Personal data sheet, together with passport photo, place, date, signature
  • School leaving certificate: notarised copy, may be handed in later
  • In case you have previously studied at another university, please provide de-registration certificate
  • Samples of your work: three one-minute MP3s of your own artistic work
